The Tampa Bay Rays' rotation has hit an unexpected early-season snag. In a move that underscores the lingering nature of his injury, the club transferred promising right-hander Ryan Pepiot to the 60-day injured list on Tuesday. This decision grants him more recovery time and a new treatment plan for the right hip inflammation that sidelined him late in spring training.
Pepiot, a key offseason acquisition expected to solidify the starting staff, is coming off a solid 2025 campaign where he posted an 11-12 record with a 3.86 ERA over 31 starts. His absence is a significant blow for a team that counts on its pitching depth. Manager Kevin Cash revealed the issue has been tricky, with Pepiot initially describing a "sticky, pinchy" sensation in his hip.
Despite initial rest and medication, the discomfort persisted during his ramp-up, leading to a recent injection and a search for a second medical opinion. "We're going to try a different method here," Cash stated, expressing hope that the extended 60-day window will finally provide a clear path to the mound for the 24-21 pitcher with a career 3.54 ERA.
In a corresponding roster shuffle, the Rays also signed right-hander Michael Grove, immediately placing him on the 15-day IL as he continues rehab from March 2025 right labrum surgery. Grove, who last pitched in the majors for the Dodgers in 2024, represents a longer-term project as he works to return from a serious shoulder procedure.
