In a thrilling UEFA Conference League semi-final first leg, Rayo Vallecano secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Strasbourg, thanks to a stroke of fortune from Brazilian striker Alemao. The 54th-minute goal, which came from a glancing shoulder rather than a header off Unai Lopez's corner, has given the Spanish side a precious advantage heading into the second leg.

The match at the electric Vallecas Stadium was a tale of two halves. Strasbourg started with intensity, but the hosts gradually seized control, unleashing an impressive 24 shots compared to the French side's five. The atmosphere was electric as the 15,000-capacity crowd roared their team forward, creating a fortress-like environment that proved decisive.

"We practiced the move we wanted to pull off. I was lucky enough to score the goal," Alemao admitted with a grin, acknowledging the fortunate nature of his decisive strike. The goal came from a well-rehearsed corner routine, with the ball deflecting off his right shoulder and looping into the far corner past a helpless Strasbourg defense.

Strasbourg goalkeeper Mike Penders was the visitors' standout performer, producing a string of impressive saves. He denied Florian Lejeune's powerful header from another Lopez corner and thwarted Alfonso Espino on a dangerous counter-attack in stoppage time. The French side's best chance came through center-back Andrew Omobamidele, whose close-range effort was cleared off the line in the 78th minute.

The match, though energetic, was scrappy at times, with both teams combining for nine yellow cards. Rayo coach Inigo Perez, however, was full of praise for his team's fighting spirit. "When you have a match like this, where we deserved to score a few more goals, you're left feeling a bit disappointed, but we have to give credit for what we've achieved," he said. "I know my players very well; they're a brilliant bunch, and fighting spirit is in their blood. In the second half, we broke free and played with more freedom. I'm happy – a win and a clean sheet."

Rayo Vallecano's journey to this stage has been remarkable, especially given the internal challenges the club has faced this season. For midfielder Isi Palazon, the night was one to remember. "What a team! We've built this up over many years. We've had a fantastic night in front of our fans, our family, our neighbourhood. It's a night to remember," he said, capturing the emotional significance of the occasion.

Strasbourg, who came from two goals down to beat Mainz 4-2 on aggregate in the quarter-finals, will be confident of overturning the deficit in the second leg. But Perez knows better than to underestimate the Ligue 1 outfit, who have shown their resilience throughout the competition. With everything still to play for, the stage is set for a dramatic conclusion to this semi-final tie.
