The Baltimore Ravens' defense is getting a major facelift in 2026, and inside linebacker Roquan Smith is at the center of it all. After finishing the 2025 season ranked eighth in the NFL in solo tackles, Smith proved he's still one of the league's most relentless playmakers. But even with his standout performance, the Ravens struggled against the pass, often getting picked apart due to a lack of consistent pressure on opposing quarterbacks.

That's all about to change. The Ravens have reloaded their defensive roster with players who bring the same fire and tenacity that Smith is known for. New additions include veteran pass rusher Trey Hendrickson, rookie linebacker Zion Young, and defensive tackle Calais Campbell. Together, they form a unit that should allow Smith to do what he does best: read, react, and attack.

Under the guidance of new head coach Jesse Minter, the Ravens are expected to deploy Smith as the "mike" linebacker, orchestrating the defense from the middle of the field. Minter plans to revamp the pass rush using a mix of 3-4, Big Nickel, and base formations. If successful, this will free up Smith to act as a spy in the middle, rather than chasing scrambling quarterbacks—a problem that plagued the Ravens far too often last season.

Keeping Smith fresh will be a top priority. He missed two games in 2025 but still racked up 130 total tackles—27 more than Houston Texans linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair, who led a Texans defense that ranked No. 1 in opponent yards allowed. That stat alone highlights how much Smith carries the load for Baltimore.

With a revamped roster and a new defensive scheme, the Ravens are aiming for a complete turnaround in 2026. Smith and his new teammates know it will take mental and physical toughness to get there. But if this group matches his intensity, opposing offenses better be ready for a fight.
