The Las Vegas Raiders have made a tough roster decision, cutting ties with Brenden Rice—the son of Hall of Fame wide receiver Jerry Rice. This marks the latest chapter in a challenging NFL journey for the young pass-catcher.

Brenden Rice, who signed a futures contract with the Raiders back in January, was officially released on Monday as the team reshuffles its roster during the offseason. The move comes after a brief stint with the Raiders that never translated into regular-season playing time.

Rice's professional career has been a rollercoaster since being drafted in the seventh round of the 2024 NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Chargers. He spent time on the New England Patriots' practice squad in 2025 but has yet to catch a pass in a regular-season NFL game—a stark contrast to his father's legendary 22,895 receiving yards and 197 touchdowns.

At 6-foot-3 with a 4.5-second 40-yard dash and a 36.5-inch vertical leap, Rice possesses the physical tools that make scouts take notice. He showed flashes of that potential in college, splitting time between Colorado and USC before exploding for 12 touchdowns as a senior with the Trojans.

However, his NFL production has been minimal. As a rookie in 2024, Rice appeared in just three games, logging only three offensive snaps and 10 special-teams snaps without recording a single stat before landing on injured reserve in November. He didn't see regular-season action at all in 2025.

For Raiders fans and football enthusiasts, this move highlights the brutal reality of roster battles in the NFL—even the son of a legend isn't guaranteed a spot. Rice remains on the fringe, and with his athletic profile, another team could still take a chance on him. It's a reminder that in professional football, legacy can open doors, but performance keeps them open.
