After getting their franchise QB at the top of the draft, the Raiders land a big get for their need at defensive tackle as Mel Kiper goes two rounds.

The Las Vegas Raiders hold the keys to the 2026 NFL Draft, and all signs point to them selecting a new franchise quarterback with the first overall pick. But what comes next? The team's second selection at No. 36 overall is where the real intrigue begins, and ESPN draft guru Mel Kiper has a powerful answer.

In his final mock draft of the cycle, Kiper projects the Raiders to make a major splash on the defensive side of the ball. After securing Indiana's Heisman-winning quarterback Fernando Mendoza at No. 1, Las Vegas turns its attention to fortifying the trenches by selecting Ohio State defensive tackle Kayden McDonald.

This pick addresses a critical need. McDonald is a disruptive force in the interior, a 326-pound powerhouse who combines surprising quickness with raw strength. His 2025 season at Ohio State was dominant, earning him unanimous First-Team All-American honors with three sacks, nine tackles for loss, and two forced fumbles.

For a Raiders defense looking to build a new identity, McDonald represents a foundational piece. His ability to collapse the pocket and shut down the run would be invaluable, helping to limit opponents' time of possession. This, in turn, gives the new offensive cornerstone, Fernando Mendoza, more opportunities to work his magic on the field.

While Mendoza is the anticipated crown jewel of the draft, poised to eventually lead Klint Kubiak's West Coast offense, a player like McDonald is the perfect complementary piece. Securing a potential star on both sides of the ball in the first two rounds would be a dream scenario for the Silver and Black, setting a formidable tone for the 2026 season and beyond.
