The Kansas City Chiefs may have finally found the pass-rushing answer their fans have been waiting for. With the 40th overall pick in the second round of the NFL Draft, the team selected R Mason Thomas from Oklahoma—a modern, explosive edge rusher who could redefine their defensive front for years to come.
In today's NFL, athletic, flexible pass rushers who combine speed with power are at a premium. Most teams would do whatever it takes to add a player with that profile, and the Chiefs didn't hesitate when Thomas was available. He brings a rare blend of agility and strength that sets him apart from the traditional defensive ends Kansas City has deployed during the Steve Spagnuolo era.
Chiefs' Vice President of Player Personnel Ryne Nutt couldn't hide his excitement when describing Thomas and fellow draft pick Peter Woods. "When the opportunity presented itself with those guys, we jumped on it," Nutt said. He emphasized the word "explosive" repeatedly. "Both play low. They have really good pad leverage, they're really fast off the ball, and they're explosive. Primarily, they're speed-rush guys, but they have sneaky power where they can keep a tackle or a center or guard off-balance, which allows them to win quickly."
That combination of speed and surprise power is exactly what makes Thomas such an intriguing prospect. Nutt added, "We felt like both were extremely disruptive. Both had high motors. Both of those kinds of features in a player result in being disruptive at the NFL level."
Thomas spent four years at Oklahoma, where he emerged as one of the top pass rushers in the SEC during his final two seasons. He earned First Team All-SEC honors twice and finished his college career with 17 sacks and 25.5 tackles for loss. His Relative Athletic Score (RAS) of 7.24 out of 10.00 ranks him 623rd out of 2,257 defensive ends since 1987—solid numbers that hint at his potential.
While some draft analysts have labeled Thomas a "situational rusher" due to his size, which is smaller than the typical defensive ends the Chiefs have relied on, his overall game defies that narrow description. He is more athletic and brings a different skill set than nearly any other edge rusher the team has had. For Chiefs fans who have long dreamed of a dynamic, modern pass rusher to anchor the defense, R Mason Thomas might just be the answer.
