With spring ball in the books and the annual Maroon & White Game now a memory, Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko has a clearer picture of where his 2026 roster stands. Thanks to 17 transfer portal additions, the Aggies are shaping up to be a team worth watching—especially on the defensive side of the ball.

While it's still early to make firm predictions, projecting depth charts is a time-honored offseason tradition, and we've already taken a swing at the offensive lineup. Now, it's time to turn our attention to the defense, where new coordinator Lyle Hemphill will have plenty of talent to work with—and some tough decisions to make before the season opener.

One of the more intriguing storylines is in the secondary, where Colorado transfer Tawfiq Byard is expected to join the rotation. Look for Elko and Hemphill to deploy a three-headed safety group, with Dalton Brooks offering positional flexibility and Marcu Ratcliffe thriving as the short-side safety. Together with Byard, they'll provide strong run support on early downs.

Behind them, Myles Davis is the top backup option, while versatile freshman Rashad "Tom Tom" Johnson could find his way into the mix on certain downs. The incoming freshman class, including Brandon Arrington and Victor Singelton, adds even more depth to an already talented room.

Over at cornerback, the rotation is far from settled. While the competition is heating up, the depth and versatility in this group should give Aggie fans plenty of confidence heading into the fall.
