Northamptonshire head coach Darren Lehmann has showered praise on captain Luke Procter, lauding him as a "class player" and shrewd tactician after a monumental personal performance. Procter's leadership was on full display during a drawn County Championship match against Kent, where his career-best, unbeaten 261 was a cornerstone of his side's effort.
The left-hander's marathon innings was part of a historic batting display, as four Northants players scored centuries—a new club record. Despite the team's dominant position, rain interruptions and resilient Kent batting ultimately secured a draw, leaving Northants still searching for their first win of the season.
Lehmann's admiration, however, extended far beyond the scoreboard. He highlighted Procter's selfless attitude and relentless energy, noting that after his double-century, the captain was still sprinting to the boundary to save runs for his bowlers. "He leads from the front," Lehmann told BBC Radio Northampton, emphasizing the infectious commitment Procter brings as a leader.
The coach also revealed a key tactical move from last season, where he suggested Procter move up to open the batting. Procter's immediate, team-first response—"I'll bat wherever you want"—epitomizes the character Lehmann values. "He's a stalwart of our club," Lehmann said, underscoring Procter's importance since joining from Lancashire in 2022 and taking over the red-ball captaincy.
While the result was frustrating, the performance offers a positive blueprint. Northamptonshire, who finished near the bottom of Division Two last season, will look to channel this momentum into their next challenge: a Friday fixture against Middlesex at Wantage Road.
