Mark Few had already started envisioning how Jack Kayil would fit into Gonzaga's backcourt next season. But those plans have been scrapped.
The prized international recruit, a 6'5" point guard from Germany, has decided to keep his name in the 2026 NBA Draft—forgoing his commitment to the Bulldogs. It's a tough blow for Few, who was eager to pair Kayil with fellow international guard Mario Saint-Supery in what could have been a dynamic backcourt duo.
Kayil, just 20 years old, was unable to attend this week's NBA draft combine, but that hasn't dampened his draft stock. On the contrary, agents Kevin Bradbury and Milan Nikolic told DraftExpress that the young guard has been receiving first-round feedback from NBA scouts—encouraging enough to make him skip college altogether.
That buzz didn't come from nowhere. Kayil put together an impressive season with Alba Berlin in Germany's top league, averaging over 12 points and three assists per game. His strong play overseas has clearly caught the attention of NBA front offices, paving the way for this decision.
For Gonzaga, it's back to the drawing board. The Bulldogs, like most powerhouse programs, have been on a frenetic search to bring in top-line talent ahead of next season. Losing a player of Kayil's caliber—especially one who was already locked in as a commit—stings. But in today's college basketball landscape, international prospects with first-round buzz are increasingly hard to keep on campus.
Still, Few and his staff have proven time and again that they can reload. While this is a setback, Gonzaga's recruiting machine rarely stays idle for long.
