On an unforgettable night at Trojan Stadium, the Fairfield boys track and field team wrote a storybook ending to their home season. With emotions running high, they made one final climb up the stadium stairs—not just for nostalgia, but to ring the victory bell after a hard-fought championship.
Despite competing slightly short-handed, the Trojans captured the team title at the Brookhart-Crew Relays in a thrilling battle that came down to the wire. Fairfield secured wins in three events, but it was the dramatic 4x100 relay that sealed the deal. Seniors Dayson Workman and Eli Hoffman anchored the team to a narrow victory over Mount Pleasant by just 0.15 seconds, pushing Fairfield past Washington with a final score of 123-117.
"It feels awesome to go out a winner," said Workman, reflecting on the emotional senior night. "I'm super proud of Hoffman for holding that lead. We got it around as a team really fast. I'm so proud of this team. We've done a lot of good things."
Hoffman was the star of the night, also edging Mount Pleasant's Griffen Jones in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.92 seconds—just moments before his clutch anchor leg in the relay. The Trojans' depth shined through as Blake Burnett, Sawyer McCready, Tucker Robertson, and Jacob Crew added another victory in the shuttle hurdle relay, clocking 1:07.04 to hold off Mount Pleasant once again. That win opened a nine-point gap over the third-place Panthers, giving Fairfield breathing room down the stretch.
Head coach Brian Dunlap praised the team's all-around effort, noting that the meet was about more than just points. "This is one of those meets you don't necessarily come to score a bunch of points. Everybody is focusing on the (Southeast) conference meet," Dunlap explained. "You come here to try and stay sharp, maybe put some kids in good positions. In the end, we came out on top by gaining points in several events. We scored in the jumps, the hurdles, the sprints, the distances and the throws. It was a big team effort."
For the Fairfield faithful, it was a night to remember—a fitting farewell to Trojan Stadium and a testament to the power of teamwork when it matters most.
