Notre Dame Sherman Oaks rallies for a 6-3 win over Anaheim Canyon in a Southern Section Division 1 softball playoff opener.

In a thrilling Southern Section Division 1 softball playoff opener, Sherman Oaks Notre Dame rallied from a three-run deficit to defeat Anaheim Canyon 6-3, thanks to a game-changing home run from sophomore Kelsey Luderer.

The Knights found themselves in an early hole after Canyon's Mia Saenz launched a two-run homer and the visitors added another run on an error. But Notre Dame's hitters refused to back down, working deep counts and forcing Canyon pitcher Kelsey Perez to throw extra pitches. Sophomore Haley Maldonado sparked the offense with an RBI double in the second inning, finishing the day with three hits.

The turning point came in the fourth inning when Luderer stepped to the plate. With the count in her favor, she crushed a game-tying home run to left field, sending her teammates into a frenzy as they mobbed her at home plate. The blast ignited a three-run inning that put the Knights ahead for good.

For Brian Luderer, Kelsey's father and an assistant coach for the Knights, every game provides a welcome escape from a personal battle close to home. His brother Matt, the athletic director at St. Francis, has been fighting an incurable brain cancer called glioblastoma for over a year. Three weeks ago, Matt suffered a relapse, but the Luderer family has rallied together to keep the faith.

"These girls give me what I need," Brian said, his voice filled with emotion. "They're like my family. The more we can win, the better for me. I'm proud he's been fighting his butt off."

For Kelsey and her twin sister Keira, who also plays a starring role for the Knights, the softball field offers a sanctuary. "This is kind of our happy place, a good place to get away," Kelsey said.

Head coach Justin Siegel, Brian's best friend and a former minor league baseball player, has built the Knights into a formidable program over the past four years. Together, they've turned Notre Dame into a team that thrives under pressure—and Thursday's comeback victory proved they have the heart to compete with the best in Division 1.
