PREP ROUNDUP: Cass baseball crushes SW for bounce-back win

The Lewis Cass baseball team’s rollercoaster ride of the season hit another fun patch in a 10-0 win over Southwood in five innings Wednesday at Flip Marschand Field. The Kings (7-7, 2-3 TRC) made quick work of the Knights (1-10, 0-5) in what was a bounce-back victory. “I thought they come out aggressive and hit the ball well, ran the bases well,” Cass coach Greg Marschand said. “Owen ...

It was a bounce-back performance at its finest for the Lewis Cass baseball team, as the Kings rolled to a dominant 10-0 victory over Southwood in just five innings Wednesday at Flip Marschand Field.

After a tough 12-1 loss to Maconaquah on Monday, Cass (7-7, 2-3 TRC) came out with renewed energy and focus, wasting no time in taking control against the Knights (1-10, 0-5). The Kings erupted for seven runs in the second inning alone, putting the game firmly out of reach.

"I thought they came out aggressive, hit the ball well, and ran the bases well," Cass coach Greg Marschand said. "It's just nice to see our guys play well. Hopefully we can build on that and keep going."

Senior right-hander Owen Cotner-Graves (2-1) was in command on the mound, tossing a three-hit shutout while walking two and striking out six. After a shaky start, he settled in and found his rhythm, keeping the Knights' hitters off balance all afternoon.

Offensively, the Kings were firing on all cylinders. Julian Davidson led the charge, going 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored. Tyler Foley provided the fireworks with a home run, a single, and two RBIs, while Andy Emmons chipped in with a double, single, and an RBI. Brennan Deeter added two hits and a run, and Landen Goldsberry contributed an RBI single.

Foley, the Kings' junior catcher, launched a two-run shot over the left-field fence during the pivotal second inning, a sign of the depth in Cass's lineup.

"Tyler does a good job. He's going to be a very good player," Marschand said. "He keeps getting better every week. I lowered him down to No. 9, so maybe I'll just keep him there the way he hit."

The win was a much-needed rebound after Monday's loss, where defensive miscues proved costly.

"Maconaquah hit the ball well, but when we make six errors on defense, you're not going to win many games," Marschand said. "That's the thing we've got to patch up. There's no excuse for it."

Looking ahead, the Kings hit the road for a challenging stretch, starting with a trip to Delphi (14-4) on Friday, followed by a game at Northfield (6-10, 1-4) on Monday.

"Delphi's always a very good baseball team," Marschand said. "Coach (Ryan) Long does a good job over there, so we always like to play them."

For a team that's been on a rollercoaster ride this season, Wednesday's performance showed what the Kings are capable of when they put it all together.
