GOSHEN — Faced with steady wind, drizzling rain and wind chills that neared 40 degrees, boys golfers had more challenges than just the fairways and greens Saturday, April 18 at Black Squirrel Golf Club. Saturday, April 18th, wasn't just a test of skill at Black Squirrel Golf Club—it was a battle against the elements. With steady wind, a cold drizzle, and wind chills dipping near 40 degrees, the 2026 Goshen Invitational demanded mental toughness and smart adjustments from every player on the course.

Rising to the top of the 12-team field for the second consecutive year were the Elkhart Lions, coached by Todd King. The Lions showcased remarkable depth and resilience, placing all five of their scorers inside the Top 10. Led by Brenden Divido's 3-over-par 75, the team carded a winning total of 309, proving their mettle in the challenging conditions.

"There was a lot of squishy ground and standing water," King noted, praising his team's ability to adjust. "They had some bad holes, but then did a great job of bouncing back." He highlighted the significant two-club difference players faced compared to practice rounds, a testament to how much the weather impacted club selection and strategy.

Fairfield secured a strong second-place finish with a team score of 352, led by senior Jake Elliott's round of 80. Elliott emphasized the critical factor of the day: mastering the wind. "It's all about the wind," he said. "You've just got to know which club to hit. It's tight... It plays long with the wind, definitely." First-year head coach Jason LeCount pointed to the mental challenge of the sudden temperature drop and praised his lower lineup, including freshman Logan Leatherman and sophomore Brett Schrock, for stepping up.

Rounding out the podium was NorthWood, finishing third with a 358. Senior Caleb Vincent led the Panthers with an 81. The team leaderboard saw Westview A (359), Central Noble (363), and Northridge (364) in a tight battle just outside the top three.

Events like the Goshen Invitational underscore what it takes to compete at a high level: not just a smooth swing, but the grit to perform when the weather turns and the course plays its toughest. It's a reminder that the right mindset is just as important as the right equipment when you're facing a long, wet day on the links.
