Porto coach Francesco Farioli felt the spirit of late defender Jorge Costa was with his side as they won the Portuguese championship for the 31st time. After a 1-0 home win against FC Alverca on Saturday, the club from northern Portugal can no longer be caught by their big rivals Benfica with two matches remaining in the season.

In an emotional triumph that resonated far beyond the pitch, Porto coach Francesco Farioli dedicated the club's 31st Portuguese championship to the memory of legendary defender Jorge Costa, who passed away tragically just before the season began.

The decisive moment came on Saturday when Polish defender Jan Bednarek scored the only goal in the 40th minute, securing a 1-0 victory over FC Alverca at the Estádio do Dragão. With two matches still to play, Porto now hold an unassailable nine-point lead over bitter rivals Benfica, who could only manage a 2-2 draw against Famalicão.

"It's a real roller-coaster of emotions," said Farioli, visibly moved after the final whistle. "Now I need to try and relax a bit, as I was completely focused on the game right up until the final minute. Jorge made some crucial interventions in defence. I'm so happy for everyone – for this squad, for everyone who works at the club, for the president, for Jorge Costa, and for all the people who deserve a night like this after so many years without this title."

Costa, who captained Porto to their famous Champions League triumph under José Mourinho in 2004, died at the age of 53 after suffering a cardiac arrest at the club's training ground. He had been serving as the club's director of football, and his loss sent shockwaves through Portuguese football at the start of the campaign.

This championship marks Porto's first since 2022 and brings them level with Benfica on total trophies won – 87 overall, according to sports daily A Bola. However, Benfica still hold the record for most league titles with 38, maintaining their edge in that particular rivalry.

For Porto fans, this title is more than just silverware. It's a tribute to a club legend whose spirit, as Farioli put it, was "with his side" every step of the way. The northern Portuguese giants have reclaimed their throne, and they did it with heart, resilience, and a touch of destiny.
