Alfie Pond has made it clear: if the chance to return to Crewe Alexandra comes around next season, he'll be first in line.
The 22-year-old defender, currently on loan from Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers, has been a standout for the League Two club since his January arrival. Making his debut against Barrow, Pond has been a near-ever-present figure, missing just two league games and starting 16 of his 18 appearances—the most consistent run of senior football in his career.
"I've really enjoyed it," Pond told BBC Radio Stoke. "It was all about coming in, playing as many games as I could, and putting myself on the map. Giving myself a platform to kick on for whatever's next."
For a young player who began his journey at Exeter City before moving to Wolves in 2022, this loan spell has been a game-changer. After cutting his teeth in the Wolves youth system and even making his Premier League debut from the bench against Fulham in November 2024, Pond knew he needed more. A brief stint with Stockport two seasons ago offered a taste, but nothing compared to the regular, rugged football of League Two.
"It's given me massive confidence," he said. "When you're playing under-21s, you're always wondering how you'd cope. You never really know until you go out and do it. Playing in a men's environment is the next step, and it's only going to benefit me for the future."
With Crewe boss Lee Bell expected to lean heavily on the loan market again next season, a return to the Mornflake Stadium looks like a natural fit. And for Pond, the feeling is mutual. "I knew straight away it was going to be right for me," he added. "I'd love to come back if the chance came."
