The Kansas City Chiefs are back on the clock in our 2026 Pride of Detroit Community Mock Draft. After selecting Ohio State safety Caleb Downs with the ninth overall pick, the Chiefs' mock GM, sprtn66, faced a crucial decision at pick 29: bolster the offense around Patrick Mahomes or double down on defense?

With the 29th selection, the Chiefs have made their choice, addressing a glaring need by selecting Missouri defensive end Zion Young. This pick follows the earlier strategy of fortifying the defense, specifically targeting the pass rush that eluded them earlier in the mock.

The selection of Young is a fascinating one. He's not considered a top-tier prospect like some edge rushers already off the board, and his college production—11.5 career sacks over four years at Michigan State and Missouri—might raise eyebrows. Off-field concerns, including a past misdemeanor assault charge and a recent pending DWI arrest, add another layer to his profile.

However, the Chiefs' mock GM is betting on a major breakout. The good news is that 6.5 of those sacks, along with 16.5 tackles for loss and two forced fumbles, came in a dominant 2025 season. Scouts praise his non-stop motor and physical, nasty playing style that will wear down offensive tackles. Crucially, he's not just a pass-rush specialist; Pro Football Focus awarded him an elite 86.6 run defense grade, marking him as one of the draft's best edge-setters. He profiles as a classic strong-side end who can anchor against the run on early downs and then unleash his power to hunt the quarterback on passing downs.

For a Chiefs team perpetually in "win-now" mode, adding a high-motor, versatile defensive lineman like Young could be the key to maintaining their defensive identity. This pick is all about betting on recent trajectory and relentless effort to solidify the trenches.
