The Bears made a push in the second half, but their pursuit of a fifth-straight conference title fell short in the championship game.

The Pleasant Valley girls lacrosse team entered Tuesday's Eastern Pennsylvania Conference Championship with sky-high expectations—and for good reason. The Bears had not lost a conference tournament game since their star senior, Rylee Rath, was in middle school. They cruised through another undefeated regular season in the EPC, including a convincing 10-6 win over the very team they faced in the title game: Nazareth.

But championship games are where legacies are tested, and this time, the Bears came up just short. Nazareth defeated Pleasant Valley 10-8 at Northampton High School, snapping the Bears' bid for a fifth consecutive conference title.

The first half was a struggle for Pleasant Valley. Nazareth built an 8-4 lead by halftime, putting the Bears in unfamiliar territory. Rath, as she has all season, carried much of the offensive load—scoring three of her team's goals in the first quarter alone and leading the Bears in scoring for the game. But it wasn't enough to keep pace with the Blue Eagles' fast start.

To their credit, the Bears didn't fold. Pleasant Valley came out strong in the second half, rattling off three straight goals to cut the deficit to just one. The momentum was palpable, and the team had chances to tie or take the lead, particularly on several free-position opportunities. But those chances went begging. Missed shots and stalled offensive possessions kept the Bears from completing the comeback.

"We shot the ball into the goalkeeper's stick every time," head coach Hanna Doerner said. "Part of that is on me—I've got to help them out a little bit more. But they've got to put the ball in the back of the cage."

After the game, Doerner faced the challenge of addressing a team unaccustomed to defeat. Her message was clear: the season isn't over. With the district tournament on the horizon, the Bears have a chance to regroup and refocus.

"A lot of them haven't lost in this game before today," Doerner said. "But the other thing to remember is that, for a lot of them, this is their first time in this situation. Most of our team are first-year varsity starters. We just made too many mistakes and couldn't come up with the win."

For a program that has set the standard in the EPC, this loss is a rare setback. But with a talented core and a district run ahead, Pleasant Valley still has plenty to play for.
