Tahlequah boys and girls soccer are gearing up to return to the playoffs after a long absence. When the Tigers take the field, Monday, May 4, vs. Bishop Kelley, they will compete in the first playoffs since the 2015 season. “It means a lot personally,” THS junior midfielder Gabe Czlonka said. “To have so many good players come before us and never had a chance to do it, it’s a privilege to see ...

After years of waiting, Tahlequah soccer is finally back where it belongs—the playoffs.

For the first time since 2015, the Tigers boys' team will step onto the postseason pitch when they face Bishop Kelley on Monday, May 4. For a program that has seen talented players come and go without a playoff berth, this moment carries extra weight.

"It means a lot personally," said junior midfielder Gabe Czlonka. "To have so many good players come before us and never had a chance to do it, it's a privilege to see all our work add up to something. I feel like in the past we've had a lot of great individuals but this year I feel like we've been brought together like a team."

The Lady Tigers aren't far behind. That same Monday, the girls' team will face Coweta, marking their first playoff appearance since 2018. For senior midfielder Avrie Baker, breaking that drought is a badge of honor.

"I've been through a lot of rotation of seniors and other players," Baker said. "To be that group that finally did it shows that we have something going on. I'm honored to be the group to accomplish it."

The Tigers boys enter the postseason with a 9-8-1 record, snapping a playoff absence that stretched more than a decade. While the roster features just three seniors—Christian Sosa, Daniel Sosa, and Isaac Williams—a strong junior class has stepped up to lead the charge on both ends of the field.

Momentum is on their side. Tahlequah closed the regular season with wins over Claremore and Midwest City, and over their last four games, they've outscored opponents 19-12, posting a 3-2 record in that stretch.

"Everybody has been willing to play their role and we have good coaching," said junior defender Tosh Pevic. "A lot of things have gone our way this year and we've made the most of opportunities."

Standing in their way is a Bishop Kelley squad that finished 9-8 overall but dominated district play with a 7-1 record. Still, the Comets stumbled in their most recent outing, falling to Holland Hall on April 30.

"I think it's going to be a tough game," Williams said. "I think the outcome is really determined by our mindset going into it and how focused we are as a game. I think we have a really close group and it is all about team chemistry."

For the Lady Tigers, last season's near-miss—missing the playoffs by just one game—became fuel for the fire. After winning 10 games a year ago, they improved by one victory this season, and that extra win made all the difference.

"It motivated us a lot," said senior defender Kenzie Daniels. "It encouraged a lot of the girls to push even though our harder districts. I know that the more games we won the better off we were."

Defense has been the backbone of the Lady Tigers' success, anchored by an all-senior unit that includes Daniels, Audi Espinoza, Lizzie Hubbard, Shaylee Sherrill, and Baker. That experience and chemistry could prove invaluable when the pressure of playoff soccer arrives.

Both teams have earned their return to the postseason. Now, it's time to see how far they can go.
