Paris Saint-Germain delivered a statement performance on Wednesday night, taking a commanding 2-0 lead over Liverpool in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final. Goals from Désiré Doué and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, coupled with a rock-solid defensive display, have the reigning champions in firm control as the tie heads to a daunting Anfield decider.

This victory carried a hint of redemption for PSG, who fell to Liverpool in Paris just over a year ago. Manager Luis Enrique had emphasized the need for a "high-quality performance" to avoid a repeat, and his squad answered the call with authority from the opening whistle.

The Parc des Princes erupted early when Doué's effort from inside the box took a crucial deflection off Ryan Gravenberch, wrong-footing goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili and nestling in the net. The early goal set the tone, with PSG dictating possession and rhythm, much as they did in their previous meeting.

Liverpool, typically so potent in attack, found themselves stifled. While Khvicha Kvaratskhelia forced a save on the half-hour mark, the defensive duo of Ibrahima Konaté and Virgil van Dijk largely held firm for the visitors. PSG's control was so complete that their own goalkeeper, Matvey Safonov, enjoyed a remarkably quiet evening.

The hosts nearly doubled their lead before the break. A breathtaking, end-to-end move orchestrated by João Neves culminated in a chance for Ousmane Dembélé, but his shot sailed high. The pressure was unrelenting.

Any hope of a Liverpool resurgence after halftime was quickly snuffed out. PSG continued to look the more dangerous side, with Dembélé again missing a golden chance from close range. The crucial second goal finally arrived to seal a dominant night, leaving Liverpool with a mountain to climb and all the momentum firmly in Parisian hands.
