The Pittsburgh Pirates may be sitting at the bottom of the NL Central, but don't let that record fool you. At 16-15, this young squad is showing real signs of life—and they're quietly positioning themselves as a legitimate postseason contender. However, there's still work to be done, and the MLB trade deadline could be the perfect opportunity to bolster the roster.
While much of the chatter has focused on improving the offense, the Pirates' rotation could also use a serious upgrade. Enter a tantalizing target: San Francisco Giants left-hander and former Cy Young winner Robbie Ray.
Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller recently floated the idea, noting that if the Giants' offensive struggles continue and they fall out of contention, Ray could become available. "Another starting pitcher is a near-must," Miller wrote. "Maybe Robbie Ray if San Francisco's offense remains a trainwreck and the Giants fall hopelessly out of contention?"
Ray would bring a much-needed left-handed presence to a rotation that is currently all righties—including ace Paul Skenes, Mitch Keller, Braxton Ashcraft, Bubba Chandler, and Carmen Mlodzinski. While Keller has been solid with a 3.18 ERA, and Ashcraft (3.71 ERA) and Mlodzinski (4.13 ERA) have held their own, the rotation lacks a true difference-maker behind Skenes. That's where Ray comes in.
At 34 years old, Ray is proving he still has plenty left in the tank. Through six starts this season, he's posted a sparkling 2.70 ERA and a 147 ERA+—which would rank as the third-best mark of his career, behind only his Cy Young-winning 2021 campaign and an All-Star season in 2017. Even on a struggling Giants team, Ray has been a bright spot.
For the Pirates, adding a veteran lefty with Cy Young pedigree could be the spark that pushes them from fringe contender to serious threat. With the trade deadline still ahead, this is one storyline worth watching closely.
