The Pittsburgh Pirates are enjoying a breakout season, and their improved offense is turning heads. With key hitters like Oneil Cruz, Konnor Griffin, Ryan O'Hearn, and Brandon Lowe leading the charge, the team is now in a position to think big at the trade deadline. And one potential move could shake up the National League.
According to Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller, the Pirates' most valuable trade chip is a young left-handed pitcher: Hunter Barco. At just 25 years old, Barco has impressive strikeout stuff and plenty of upside. But with a 7.71 ERA across five outings this season, he might be more valuable as a trade piece than as a rotation arm for Pittsburgh right now.
Miller suggests a deal that makes a ton of sense for both sides: sending Barco to the Minnesota Twins in exchange for veteran catcher Ryan Jeffers, plus a few supplementary pieces. For the Pirates, this would be a direct upgrade behind the plate. Jeffers is hitting .286 with four home runs this season, and his offensive production is exactly what Pittsburgh needs to bolster its lineup.
The Twins would also benefit. Barco is under club control through 2031, giving them a cost-controlled lefty with long-term potential. Jeffers, on the other hand, is making $6.7 million this season and will become a free agent after the year. Trading him now for a young arm with years of team control is a smart, forward-thinking move for Minnesota.
For the Pirates, this kind of deal would be a perfect blend of selling high on a prospect and addressing a clear need. With the trade deadline approaching, Pittsburgh has the pieces to make a splash—and a young lefty like Barco could be the key to landing the catcher they need to keep their winning momentum going.
