The Pittsburgh Pirates have made a significant investment in their future, signing shortstop Konnor Griffin to a massive $140 million extension. This move solidifies Griffin as the franchise cornerstone, but it also creates a ripple effect throughout the organization's infield depth chart.

As a direct result of Griffin's promotion to the big-league roster, the Pirates needed to clear a spot, leading to the designation of infielder Emmanuel Valdez for assignment. The 27-year-old, acquired from the Boston Red Sox in the 2024-25 offseason, has now cleared waivers and been outrighted to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Valdez's path to playing time in Pittsburgh had become increasingly narrow. With Griffin at shortstop, Brandon Lowe at second, and Spencer Horwitz holding down first base, opportunities were scarce. Even with Jared Triolo's injury creating uncertainty at third, Valdez had fallen behind other options like Nick Yorke and Nick Gonzales on the organizational depth chart.

Since reporting to Triple-A, he is still searching for his first hit in ten plate appearances. For now, the infielder will look to regain his form in the minors as the Pirates move forward with their new-look, Griffin-led infield.
