Phoenix Rising is on fire—and their defense is finally matching their offensive swagger. The club secured its third consecutive league victory with a gritty 1-0 win over the Pittsburgh Riverhounds, powered by Ihsan Sacko's sixth goal of the season. Even more impressive? That's three straight clean sheets in USL Championship play.

Let's rewind a bit. Last season, Rising's Achilles' heel was a leaky defense. They could score at will—Sacko and company made sure of that—but Pa-Modou Kah's squad often gave up goals just as fast. They allowed 48 goals in the regular season, the second-most in the Western Conference. Even early this year, it looked like more of the same: eight goals conceded in the first five games.

But something has clicked. Over the last three league matches, the backline has been rock-solid, holding opponents scoreless for more than 370 minutes—dating back to a 2-0 loss to Sacramento. They're limiting quality chances, holding opponents under one expected goals (xG) in two of those three outings. The lone exception was against Miami, where they still managed to keep a clean sheet despite a higher xG.

Goalkeeper Patrick Rakovsky is reaping the benefits. He's faced just six saves during this run, with a goals-prevented mark of 0.65—meaning he's not being tested often, but when he is, he's up to the task.

Offensively, the hero was once again Ihsan Sacko. In the 64th minute, the French forward turned chaos into gold, pouncing on a loose ball that Pittsburgh's defense failed to clear. He slotted home calmly for his fifth goal in his last three USL Championship games—following braces against New Mexico and Miami. That's 10 goal contributions across all competitions this season, the best form of his Rising tenure.

But there's a concern: Sacko went down with an apparent lower-body injury in the 70th minute. For a team riding his hot streak, that's a worrying sight.

Still, across all competitions, Phoenix Rising is building real momentum. If the defense keeps this up and Sacko's injury proves minor, this team could be a serious threat come playoff time.
