The Philadelphia Phillies are in full crisis mode, and one of their most surprising struggles could lead to a major roster shakeup. After a brutal early-season losing streak that nearly stretched two weeks, the team fired manager Rob Thomson and promoted Don Mattingly as interim skipper. But according to one analyst, Thomson might not be the only one shown the door.
FanSided's Christopher Kline has predicted that the Phillies could trade third baseman Alec Bohm, a 29-year-old former top prospect and 2024 All-Star who is making $10 million this season. The reason? Bohm has been one of the worst hitters in all of baseball to start the year.
"Alec Bohm is essentially the worst qualified hitter in the majors right now," Kline wrote. "He's batting .157 (16-for-102) with a .444 OPS. He has a single home run. Bohm has never generated much power, but he can't elevate or drive the baseball whatsoever right now."
Bohm's struggles are even more glaring given the context. The Phillies entered the season with World Series aspirations, but after an 8-16 start, they find themselves tied with the Mets for the worst record in the National League. Their run differential of minus-50 is the worst in baseball by a wide margin.
Bohm's future in Philadelphia has been uncertain since the offseason, and his prolonged slump may force the front office's hand. With the team desperate for a spark and Bohm's trade value still buoyed by his All-Star pedigree, moving him could be the most logical next step in a season that has quickly gone off the rails.
