The Philadelphia Phillies are finding their footing after a rocky start, posting a 7-3 record over their last 10 games. But at 16-20 overall and nine games back of the division-leading Atlanta Braves, there's still plenty of work to do if they want to climb back into the National League East race.
With the trade deadline approaching, the Phillies may need to make some bold moves to stay competitive. One name that's been floated as a potential target is St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Lars Nootbaar—a player who could bring some much-needed depth to Philadelphia's outfield.
Nootbaar, who has yet to make his season debut after undergoing surgery on both heels this offseason, is expected to return to the Cardinals' lineup in a few weeks. While St. Louis has been playing well, Cardinals president of baseball operations Chaim Bloom has hinted that the team's long-term plan hasn't changed, which could make Nootbaar available in the right deal.
According to Patrick McAvoy of SI, "The Phillies are 14-20 on the season and could use some more outfield depth. Nootbaar could be penciled in anywhere in the outfield." That kind of versatility is exactly what Philadelphia needs as they look to shake up their lineup.
Nootbaar has quietly put together some solid seasons over his first five years in the majors, with his best campaign coming in 2022 when he posted a 124 OPS+. While he's been consistent, he's not exactly the kind of game-changer who will single-handedly turn the Phillies' season around. The key here will be the price tag—if Philadelphia can land him without giving up top prospects, it's worth exploring. But if the Cardinals demand a king's ransom, the Phillies would be wise to wait for a better opportunity.
For now, this is a trade proposal worth watching—but only if the price is right.
