National golf broadcasters keep saying the PGA Championship is in Philadelphia, but it's actually in Newtown Square, PA.

If you've been tuning into national golf coverage this week, you've probably heard broadcasters say the PGA Championship is being held in Philadelphia. But if you're from the area, you know that's not quite right.

The tournament is actually taking place at Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania—a charming borough about 30 miles west of the city. It's close enough to be considered part of the Philadelphia metro area, but it's most definitely not inside the city limits. And to make things even trickier, there's also a Newtown in Bucks County, which sits on the opposite side of Philadelphia. No wonder viewers are confused.

So why do national announcers keep saying "Newtown in Philadelphia"? It comes down to media market logic. TV producers and sports programmers think in terms of big, recognizable markets rather than individual towns. East Rutherford, New Jersey, gets lumped into "New York" when the Giants or Jets play there, and the same thing happens here. It's a branding shortcut that makes the location familiar to casual viewers—even if it drives local residents up the wall.

For anyone who grew up in the Philly suburbs, hearing "Newtown in Philadelphia" is like hearing nails on a chalkboard. Newtown Square may be part of the wider region, but calling it Philadelphia erases the real boundaries between city and suburb. The city limits start and end at a very specific line, and this golf course is well past it.

Even the PGA Championship's own website adds to the confusion, billing the event as the "PGA Championship in Philadelphia since 1962." But if you're planning to catch the action in person, remember: you'll want to head to Newtown Square, not the city itself. With a field stacked full of star power, it's a tournament you won't want to miss—just make sure you know exactly where you're going.
