Let's just say it was a tough finish for the reigning Masters champ at Aronimink.

Rory McIlroy's pursuit of the calendar Grand Slam hit an early roadblock at the 2026 PGA Championship, and the reigning Masters champion didn't mince words when reflecting on a frustrating opening round at Aronimink.

The 37-year-old signed for a four-over-par 74 on Thursday, leaving him seven shots adrift of the early leaders. When asked to sum up his performance, McIlroy offered a single, NSFW word that captured his exasperation perfectly.

"I started missing fairways," McIlroy explained. "I missed the fairway right on 4, the fairway right on 6, the fairway right on 7, fairway right on 9. From there, it's hard—you know, I didn't have great angles either. Then obviously you start missing it just off the edges of these greens, it gets tricky."

What followed was something McIlroy had never experienced in nearly 1,000 career PGA Tour rounds. After a birdie on the par-3 fifth (his 14th hole of the day) brought him back to even par, he boarded what he called "the bogey train"—ripping off four consecutive bogeys to close out his round. According to stats guru Justin Ray, it marked the first time in McIlroy's professional career that he'd suffered such a stretch.

The silver lining? When asked if the toe injury that cut short his practice round earlier in the week was bothering him, McIlroy had a much shorter, more positive one-word answer: "No."

McIlroy will look to right the ship when he tees off for his second round at 2:05 PM ET on Friday. He'll be hoping to catch a different kind of train—one that takes him back up the leaderboard and into contention for another major title.
