The Peoria Rivermen kicked off the SPHL President's Cup Finals in dramatic fashion Thursday night, securing a 2-1 overtime victory over the Evansville Thunderbolts in Game 1 at Carver Arena. With 2,178 fans on their feet, the Rivermen found their playoff hero just 88 seconds into sudden-death overtime, when Tyler Ryder delivered the game-winner.
Ryder collected the puck between the circles, drifted left, and unleashed a shot that rattled through goaltender Kristian Stead, clinching the series opener. The win gives Peoria a 1-0 lead in the best-of-5 series, with Game 2 set for Friday night back at Carver Arena.
The Rivermen came out firing, spending the first 75 seconds of the game in Evansville's zone. They earned an early power play in the eighth minute but couldn't convert despite three shots. The scoreless tie finally broke at 13:38 of the first period, when captain Alec Baer skated through the left side of the zone, reached the endline, and one-handed the puck into the crease. Griffen Fox was there on the doorstep to knock it past Stead and inside the right post, giving Peoria a 1-0 lead and a commanding 10-3 shots advantage by period's end.
Evansville pushed back in the second period, building presence in the Rivermen zone during the first eight minutes, but Peoria's defense cleared the danger. The Rivermen nearly extended their lead midway through the period on quality chances from Mike Gelatt and Matt Wiesner, and another terrific shift with about six minutes left produced four shots as Evansville scrambled to keep the puck out. A scary moment came with 2:35 remaining when Rivermen winger Daniel Chartrand, parked in front of the net, was hit in the face by a deflected puck off friendly fire and headed to the bench for medical attention.
The third period brought high stakes when Braydon Barker was called for holding at 4:41, sending Evansville to its first power play of the game. Peoria's penalty kill unit came through, protecting the 1-0 lead. But with 11:46 left in regulation, the Thunderbolts tied it 1-1 when Evan Miller, uncovered below the right faceoff circle dot, turned and fired a shot over goaltender Nick Latinovich, forcing overtime.
For hockey fans and gear enthusiasts alike, this series is a reminder that every game—and every piece of equipment—can make the difference in a championship run. Stay tuned for Game 2, where the Rivermen look to take a commanding lead.
