The Peoria Rivermen are one win away from hockey immortality. After a dominant 5-1 victory in Game 2 of the SPHL President's Cup Finals on Friday night, the Rivermen have taken a commanding 2-0 series lead and are now on the brink of claiming the championship.
The atmosphere at Carver Arena was electric, with 3,542 fans packing the stands. And the home team gave them something to cheer about almost immediately. Just 20 seconds after the opening faceoff, center Garrett Devine pounced on a rebound, shifted his stance, and ripped the puck past Evansville goaltender Kristian Stead to give Peoria a lightning-fast 1-0 lead.
But the Thunderbolts weren't about to roll over. Evansville answered back at the 5:26 mark, tying the game on their very first shot when Aiden MacIntosh deflected a shot from above the crease after a failed clearing attempt by the Rivermen. The visitors kept the pressure on, forcing Peoria to go nearly six minutes without a shot on goal.
The turning point came early in the second period. Peoria came out with renewed energy and purpose, and it paid off in a big way. First, SPHL goalscoring champion Mike McChesney (who netted 33 goals during the regular season) skated right-to-left across the hashmarks and flipped a backhander over Stead's shoulder, off the crossbar, and in. The play went to video review, but the call stood: 2-1 Rivermen.
Just 2 minutes and 28 seconds later, Braydon Barker barreled down the left side of the slot on a two-on-one rush and buried the puck to stretch the lead to 3-1. That quick-strike combination effectively broke the back of Evansville's resistance.
The Rivermen added two empty-net goals in the final two minutes of regulation, sending the crowd into a frenzy. As the clock ticked down, the fans rose to their feet, chanting, "We want the Cup."
The best-of-5 series now shifts to Evansville for Game 3 on Wednesday. A win there would seal the championship for Peoria. If necessary, Game 4 would follow on Thursday. For a team that has shown both explosive offense and gritty resilience, the Rivermen are playing like a team of destiny. And their fans are already dreaming of the celebration that could be just around the corner.
