The Penn State Nittany Lions basketball program is making headlines this week with a flurry of activity that has fans buzzing. Head coach Mike Rhoades has been busy on multiple fronts, securing a promising new recruit, filling a key coaching vacancy, and locking in a high-profile preseason tournament for the 2026-2027 season.

First up, the roster just got a major international boost with the addition of 6'10" Serbian forward Aleksandar Zecevic. Zecevic has been honing his skills professionally in Spain, playing for Bilbao Basket. Last season, he put up impressive numbers for Bilbao's U-22 team, averaging over 10 points on a sharp 58 percent shooting clip, along with five rebounds per game. He's the ninth new face this offseason, joining a diverse group of international talents like Andy Gemao (Philippines), François Wibaut (France), and Roko Prkačin (Croatia), as well as domestic transfers including Jay Rodgers, Tim Oboh, Thomas Allard, Brant Byers, and Roberts Blums. This blend of global and local talent is shaping up to give the Nittany Lions a refreshed, competitive edge.

Off the court, the coaching staff is getting stronger too. Penn State has added Dwayne Stephens as an assistant coach. Stephens brings a wealth of experience, having served as a longtime assistant under Tom Izzo at Michigan State before spending the last four years as head coach at Western Michigan. He's also got a special connection to the program: he's the brother of former Penn State star Jarrett Stephens. This move should bring both tactical know-how and a deep sense of Nittany Lion pride to the bench.

And for fans already looking ahead to the 2026-2027 season, there's exciting scheduling news. According to CBS Sports insider Jon Rothstein, Penn State will be spending Thanksgiving week in the Bahamas for the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament. This will be the men's team's first appearance in the event, following the women's team's debut last year. The tournament features an eight-team format split into two brackets, with every team guaranteed three games. Penn State's bracket includes Memphis and Wake Forest, with a fourth team still to be announced. On the other side of the bracket, Virginia and Texas A&M—both NCAA Tournament participants this past season—will be waiting. It's a challenging field that promises high-level competition and a unique holiday experience for the squad.
