When you think of Penn State wrestling, you think of dominance. And that reputation isn't just built on collegiate mats—it's forged on international stages, too. At the Pan American Championships in Coralville, Iowa, Nittany Lion star Levi Haines proved exactly why.
Competing in the 79-kilogram weight class, Haines delivered a performance that was nothing short of masterful. Over the course of the tournament, he surrendered just two total points—an astonishing feat that underscored his technical prowess and relentless pressure. The result? A well-earned gold medal, his first at the Pan Am level.
Haines wasn't alone on the podium for Team USA. NC State's Trent Hidlay also struck gold in the 92 kg freestyle division, but it was Haines' run that turned heads. Coming off a collegiate season that saw him post a perfect 26-0 record, the Penn State standout added a fourth Big Ten title and a second NCAA championship to his resume before stepping onto the international stage.
For the Nittany Lions, Haines' victory is just the latest highlight in an incredible postseason. Several of his teammates are still competing for spots in the World Team Trials, with eyes set on the World Championships—wrestling's ultimate stage. But for now, the program can savor this moment: Levi Haines, gold medalist, and a testament to the relentless excellence that defines Penn State wrestling.
