The Pittsburgh Penguins are wasting no time this offseason. After a first-round playoff exit at the hands of the Philadelphia Flyers, the team has made its first two roster moves ahead of the NHL Draft and free agency.
On Thursday, the Penguins announced contract extensions for forward Connor Dewar and defenseman Ilya Solovyov. These signings signal the team's intent to build depth early, with the draft set for June 26 and free agency opening July 1.
Dewar's deal is a two-year extension worth an average annual value of $2.25 million, keeping him in Pittsburgh through the 2027-28 season. Acquired from the Toronto Maple Leafs at the 2025 trade deadline, Dewar just wrapped up his first full season with the Penguins—and it was a career year. In 76 games, he tallied 14 goals and 16 assists for 30 points, establishing himself as a reliable middle-six forward.
Solovyov, on the other hand, signed a one-year extension worth $850,000. The 25-year-old defenseman split the 2025-26 season between the Colorado Avalanche and the Penguins. In 14 games with Pittsburgh, he recorded five assists while averaging just over 14 minutes of ice time per game.
With more than $61 million in cap space heading into the offseason, the Penguins still have several free agents to address. But these early signings show the front office is focused on locking in key contributors while keeping flexibility for bigger moves ahead.
