Roma captain Lorenzo Pellegrini is racing against time on two fronts: returning from injury and securing his future with the Giallorossi.

The number 7, sidelined recently, is eager to rejoin manager Gian Piero Gasperini's squad for the crucial final stretch of the Serie A season. While the realistic target appears to be the Derby della Capitale against Lazio, a potential return for the match against Parma hasn't been ruled out.

Off the pitch, Pellegrini faces a pivotal decision regarding his contract. With his current deal set to expire, he would be free to negotiate with other clubs starting July 1st if no extension is reached. According to reports, discussions between Roma and the midfielder's representatives began about a month ago.

However, the financial landscape has shifted. Pellegrini currently earns €6 million per season, but to stay, he would need to accept a significant pay cut—reportedly at least 50%. It's a tough ask for any player, but the situation is far from hopeless.

Gasperini has left the door wide open for his captain. The coach is reportedly happy with Pellegrini remaining in Rome and sees him as a valuable asset—no longer an indispensable starter, but an important figure offering experience and quality. This mutual respect between manager and player could be the deciding factor.

For now, both sides are reflecting. A definitive meeting is expected at the end of the season, when Roma's European qualification status—and the type of competition they'll face next year—will shape the final decision. For Pellegrini, the clock is ticking, but Gasperini's blessing might just be the push needed to keep him in the Eternal City.
