The Lady Oilers want to cherish every moment and hope the season ends with laughter and more sombreros stacked after lifting the state championship trophy in Austin.

The Pearland High School Lady Oilers are on a mission—and they're making it look like a whole lot of fun along the way. Ranked No. 2 in Texas softball, this team has its eyes locked on a fourth state championship in school history, and they're not shy about saying it.

After sweeping Cy Ridge 2-0 in the best-of-three regional semifinals, Pearland now heads to the A Division I regional championship. But what happens after the final out? That's when the real show begins. The Lady Oilers have a tradition of stacking sombreros, gloves, and whatever else they can find on their teammates' heads during postgame interviews. It's part celebration, part chaos—and all heart.

"It's a little much, but I think I look cut still," joked senior Madelyn Guzman, who's been part of this team since she was a freshman.

But don't let the laughter fool you. When they step between the lines, it's all business. Senior shortstop Elaina Njus put it best: "The second you look at us, you see someone helping someone else on the field. We always pick up one another."

That chemistry is paying off in a big way. The Lady Oilers are stacked with talent, starting with Guzman in the circle. She recently threw an 11-strikeout no-hitter in Game 1 of the regional semifinals, then followed it up with 15 strikeouts in the series clincher. "I love this team," she said. "We all play for each other."

Pearland last won a state title in 2023, and three current seniors were freshmen on that championship squad. Now, with the end of their high school careers in sight, the motivation is stronger than ever. "It means everything to me because it's my senior year," Guzman said. "I really want to go out with a bang."

Senior Payton Shugart didn't mince words when asked how far this team can go. "Oh, we're winning it all. We already made our decision. And that's it. We're winning it."

With a blend of serious talent, deep bonds, and a tradition of stacking wins—and sombreros—the Lady Oilers are determined to make this season one for the history books. Every moment, every postgame laugh, and every strikeout is a step closer to Austin.
