It was a week to remember for two standout athletes from the Kitsap Peninsula. Central Kitsap softball star Savvy Paulson and Olympic baseball ace Chase Beninger have been named the Kitsap Sun Athletes of the Week for May 4-9, following a decisive reader vote.
Paulson absolutely dominated the diamond. She posted a blistering .600 batting average, racking up three doubles, two triples, a home run, and eight RBIs. As if that weren't enough, she also twirled a no-hitter against Silas, striking out nine batters. Her performance earned her a landslide 1,577 votes, outpacing a strong field of nominees that included Klahowya's Macayla Wrataric, Bainbridge's Else Drugge, and Olympic's Emerson Duncan.
On the boys' side, Beninger was equally impressive on the mound. He fired a complete-game shutout, leading Olympic to a 1-0 victory over North Mason. His 14 strikeouts were the story of the game, earning him 214 votes. He edged out fellow nominees Dalton Watson and Brandon Smith of Klahowya, as well as Bainbridge's Ignacio Llorens.
This marks the second Athlete of the Week honor for Paulson, who previously won for the week of March 18-23. Beninger also adds to his collection, having won for the week of April 20-25. Their consistent excellence is a testament to the high level of spring sports competition in the area.
The next Athlete of the Week poll is set to go live on May 20, so stay tuned to see which local stars will earn the next fan-favorite nod.
