The Chicago Bulls' search for a new top basketball executive is heating up, and a familiar face has emerged as the leading candidate. Matt Lloyd, currently the general manager of the Minnesota Timberwolves, is reportedly the front-runner to fill the Bulls' front office vacancy—and his potential hiring would bring a compelling full-circle story to the Windy City.
While Lloyd is busy preparing the Timberwolves for their second-round NBA playoff series against the San Antonio Spurs, he's also keeping a close eye on Chicago. According to league sources cited by Chicago Tribune Bulls writer Julia Poe, Lloyd remains a "strong front-runner" in a small candidate pool that also includes Atlanta Hawks vice president of basketball operations Bryson Graham.
For Lloyd, this isn't just another job opportunity—it's a homecoming. A lifelong Bulls fan who grew up in Fenton High School, he started his NBA journey on the West Side of Chicago in 1994 with a part-time gig in the Bulls' video department. As The Athletic once noted, he'd even call his grandmother during Michael Jordan's player introductions just so she could hear the roar of the crowd. That deep-rooted connection to the franchise's golden era makes this potential move especially poignant.
The current Bulls squad is a far cry from those championship days, which is precisely why the organization is searching for someone with Lloyd's credentials to help restore the glory that's been missing for nearly three decades. His career trajectory took a pivotal turn thanks to former Bulls star and executive John Paxson, who promoted Lloyd from media services coordinator to director of college scouting in 2003. That leap of faith paid off handsomely—Lloyd was part of the decision-making team that selected Jimmy Butler with the 30th pick in the 2011 draft, widely considered one of the best "sleeper" picks in franchise history.
Paxson, now serving as senior advisor of basketball operations, is working alongside president Michael Reinsdorf in the search process. Interviewing a protégé he helped climb the NBA ladder should make for smooth sailing. Lloyd was also close to the late Jerry Krause, one of Jerry Reinsdorf's most trusted advisors, adding another layer of familiarity to this potential hire. If Lloyd lands the job, he'll have the chance to write the next chapter for a franchise that's been waiting for its next great moment.
