Paul McGinley has one major concern about Cameron Young heading into the PGA Championship, and it's not about his game.
Young was absolutely dominant at the Cadillac Championship this week, storming to a six-shot victory over Scottie Scheffler on the Blue Monster at Doral. It was his third PGA Tour win, and it was clinical—if not exactly a thriller for the neutral fan. The 28-year-old seized control early and never looked back, proving once again that he can handle the toughest tracks on tour.
With wins at The Players Championship and a strong showing at The Masters, Young is now firmly in the conversation as a favorite for the PGA Championship later this month. He's shown he can win under pressure, and his Ryder Cup performance proved he's not afraid of the big stage. For many, it feels like the natural next step in his career.
But McGinley, speaking on Sky Sports, has a word of caution. Young confirmed after his win that he'll be in the field for the Truist Championship in the coming days. And that, says McGinley, could be a problem.
"You have to think so after that performance, but I would have a word of caution and warning," McGinley said. "Having won this week, playing the Truist next week and then trying to win the PGA Championship—that is a big, big ask."
McGinley points out that other top players are picking their spots more carefully. "The other guys are going to be rested. Scottie played this week but is not going to play next week. Rory didn't play this week but is going to play next week. So the guys are picking and choosing."
He also highlights the challenge of maintaining momentum through three big tournaments in a row. "Can Young maintain this? Don't forget Matt Fitzpatrick too, another one of the hottest players in the game at the moment, along with Cameron Young. He has had a good break this week and should be a little bit fresher."
"My only concern for Young is that he has got everything now, he has the belief, but is he going to be rested enough to play three big tournaments in a row?"
It's a fair question, especially given the grueling schedule ahead. Young has the talent and the confidence, but as McGinley notes, even the best players need to manage their energy. The PGA Championship will be the ultimate test—not just of skill, but of stamina.
