The New England Patriots are trading former third-round draft pick Marte Mapu to the Houston Texans.

The New England Patriots have finalized a trade, sending linebacker Marte Mapu to the Houston Texans. Initially reported as a release, the deal sees New England part ways with the 2023 third-round pick and a 2027 seventh-round selection in exchange for a 2027 sixth-round pick from Houston.

Mapu's role in New England diminished significantly this past season, as he was on the field for just 12% of defensive snaps under head coach Mike Vrabel. However, his special teams value remained, with his usage there jumping to 58% of snaps. During his tenure with the Patriots, the versatile defender started 10 games, compiling 89 tackles, three interceptions, and five forced fumbles.

For the Texans, this move adds a young, athletic defender to one of the league's most surprising and formidable units. Mapu will look to carve out a new role with a playoff-caliber team on the rise. For the rebuilding Patriots, the trade creates another hole at linebacker and on special teams, a need they will likely address in future drafts as they continue their roster overhaul.
