Patriots quarterback Drake Maye is standing firmly behind his head coach, Mike Vrabel, amid a recent off-field controversy. Speaking at the Truist Championship Pro-AM at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, North Carolina, Maye took time to praise Vrabel, calling him "a great human being" and expressing confidence that the distractions won't derail the team's focus for the upcoming season.
"No, I don't think it'll be a distraction," Maye told the Associated Press on Wednesday. "He's our head coach, and he's done a great job of talking to us and walking us through everything. I'm just looking forward to getting back to work and getting ready."
The support comes after the New York Post published photos last month showing Vrabel with former NFL insider Dianna Russini at an Arizona resort. Vrabel has since addressed the situation publicly, acknowledging his missteps. "I take accountability for my actions and the actions that caused a distraction to the people I care most about—my family, this football team, the organization, and our fans," Vrabel said before Day 1 of the NFL Draft. "My previous actions don't meet the standard that I hold myself to. They don't."
Vrabel missed the third day of the draft to attend counseling and has spoken to the team multiple times about the matter. But Maye remains unfazed, emphasizing that the team is ready to move forward. "I think that'll take care of itself," he said. "I know he's got the right mindset, and I know he's a great human being. Like I said, I love playing for him."
As the Patriots gear up for the 2026-27 NFL campaign, all eyes will be on how the team rallies around their embattled coach. With Maye's public vote of confidence, it's clear the locker room is standing united.
