The NFL Draft is over, which means that the time for personnel turnover has arrived. For the New England Patriots, the first domino to fall already is a big one.
Marshall Oium, the team’s director of scouting projects, will not be back with the club. Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston was first to report the Patriots parting ways with Oium.
A former quarterback at the University of Chicago, Oium came to New England as a pro scout in 2018. He spent his initial five seasons with the team in that position before being promoted to assistant director of scouting in 2023. The following year under the club’s new regime, he was named director of football strategy. Last year, he moved into his most recent role.
Before his eight seasons with the Patriots, Oium spent four years with the Cleveland Browns as a pro scout and scouting assistant.
How the Patriots will replace Oium moving forward remains to be seen. They could opt to promote another member of their scouting department into the now-vacant position, or simply abolish it entirely while distributing his responsibilities among other executives.
Oium is the first reported departure from the Patriots’ personnel department this offseason. The team previously experienced some turnover on the coaching staff, including naming Terrell Williams as assitant head coach and promoting Zak Kuhr to defensive coordinator.
The Patriots’ players are currently in the first phase of the offseason workout program.
