New England's seventh-round pick faces a misdemeanor charge following an alleged altercation at a Boston College dorm

The New England Patriots' seventh-round draft pick, Quintayvious Hutchins, has found himself in legal trouble just weeks after being selected. The rookie pass rusher was arrested and charged with misdemeanor assault and battery on a family or household member, according to court documents obtained by CBS News.

The incident unfolded Tuesday evening at a Boston College dormitory, where police responded to reports of "a male and female fighting in the hallway." A witness told officers they saw Hutchins and a woman pushing each other, and that Hutchins grabbed the woman by the neck. The witness clarified that the contact was "a firm grab to the neck, not strangulation." The woman declined to have a photo taken of her neck and stated she was "OK."

Hutchins, who was taken with the No. 247 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft out of Boston College, told officers the altercation began over an argument about food. He said he left the dorm, and when he returned, the woman had thrown his belongings into the hallway. He was arraigned Wednesday in Newton District Court, where he entered a not guilty plea.

The Patriots issued a statement acknowledging the report: "We are aware of the report involving Quintayvious Hutchins. We take these matters very seriously and are in the process of gathering additional information. We will not have further comment at this time."

Hutchins was a team captain for the Boston College Eagles, recording 35 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, and two sacks in 10 games last season. CBS Sports ranked him as the No. 260 overall prospect in the 2026 draft class, praising his high motor despite lacking prototypical pass-rush size. As a seventh-round pick, Hutchins was viewed as a developmental project for New England's defense, but this off-field issue could complicate his path to making the roster.
