Jim Furyk has been named as the United States Ryder Cup captain for the second time.
Furyk will lead out the US Ryder Cup team at Adare Manor in 2027, and he’ll be hoping to improve drastically upon his last showing as captain back in 2018 in France.
The Europeans have been totally dominant at the Ryder Cup over the past three decades and have won eight of the last 12 meetings with the Americans.
Furyk will be desperate to change all of that when the Ryder Cup heads to Ireland in September 2027.
It will be very interesting to see whether Patrick Reed makes Furyk’s team in 17 months’ time, especially after what he said about the 55-year-old’s captaincy in France.
With ticket prices for the Ryder Cup at Adare Manor already soaring, the 2027 edition of the competition is expected to be one of the most exciting yet.
The US desperately need a win in order to prevent the Europeans from triumphing three times on the bounce.
Reed will be hopeful of making the team again, having not played at a Ryder Cup since 2018 in France.
After Europe won that encounter by a dominant scoreline of 17.5-10.5, Reed spoke about some of Furyk’s decision making during an interview with the New York Times.
“For somebody as successful in the Ryder Cup as I am, I don’t think it’s smart to sit me twice,” said Reed, who was left out of the two foursomes sessions at Le Golf National.
He then bemoaned the fact that he wasn’t given the chance to build upon the excellent partnership he formed with Jordan Spieth in 2016.
“The issue’s obviously with Jordan not wanting to play with me,” Reed said.
“I don’t have any issue with Jordan. When it comes right down to it, I don’t care if I like the person I’m paired with or if the person likes me as long as it works and it sets up the team for success.”
Reed is never one to shy away from difficult conversations.
And there may well be a few of those if he qualifies for the 2027 Ryder Cup at Adare Manor.
The 35-year-old is playing exclusively on the DP World Tour this year, but he will be able to compete on the PGA Tour once again from August 26th onwards.
Reed will be desperate to qualify automatically for the US Ryder Cup team in Ireland because if he doesn’t, Furyk may well not be inclined to pick him.
‘Captain America’, as Reed has become known, possesses an exceptional Ryder Cup record, with seven wins, three defeats and two halves to his name from the 12 matches that he has played.
He has also won all three of his singles matches. He’s exactly the kind of player the Americans need on their team at Adare Manor.
However, whether he does enough to make the side over the next 15 months or so remains to be seen.
