The following is a statement from the family of Pat Caputo, who died Thursday after a battle with pancreatic cancer.

For over four decades, Pat Caputo was a fixture in Detroit sports—a voice that resonated from the press box to the radio studio, and a byline that fans trusted. This week, the sports world lost a legend. Pat passed away Thursday after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. His family has shared a heartfelt farewell, written in his own words, as a final message to the colleagues, listeners, and readers who made his career so meaningful.

"For more than forty years, Detroit's sports fans had Pat's full attention," his family writes. "In the months since his diagnosis, we have had it—listening as he told us his stories: the ones from the press box, TV and radio studio, and the ones from his life. What follows is drawn from those conversations. The words are his."

Pat's journey into sports journalism wasn't a straight path. "I haven't said much publicly since January because I haven't known what to say," he told his family. "When I came out of college I had nothing on my resume. I couldn't type. In journalism class I never wrote anything anyone would want to read." But he carried one simple philosophy: "Take the job nobody else wants. Out-work them on the part nobody else cares about." A professor gave him a shot in Three Rivers, Michigan, where he learned the trade photographing the Pet of the Week with a Sears camera. That humble start led to a legendary career.

To his audience, Pat was known as "The Book"—a walking encyclopedia of sports knowledge. To his family, he was simply a cherished member of their world. "We are all so proud of Pat and all his accomplishments," they shared. "While he's leaving a void in our lives and in the community that he so proudly represented, he's made his mark and his legacy lives on."

Whether you read his columns, heard his voice on the radio, or just appreciated his passion for the game, Pat Caputo gave Detroit sports fans his full attention for more than 40 years. Now, we give him ours—and a grateful farewell.
