Panthers' inspiring QB story retires after 9 seasons of pro football

This was quite the journey to the NFL.

P.J. Walker's football journey was never supposed to lead to the NFL spotlight. The undrafted quarterback out of Temple defied the odds at every turn, carving out a nine-year professional career that included unforgettable moments in a Carolina Panthers uniform. Now, at 31, Walker has announced his retirement, closing the book on one of the league's most inspiring underdog stories.

Walker's path was anything but conventional. After going undrafted in 2017, he bounced around the Indianapolis Colts' practice squad, waiting for a real opportunity. That break finally came in the XFL, where he dominated for the Houston Roughnecks in 2020. His electric play caught the attention of his former Temple coach, Matt Rhule, who brought him to Carolina.

With the Panthers, Walker became a fan favorite. He started seven games over three seasons, posting a 4-3 record and throwing five touchdowns. But his signature moment came on a miraculous, game-winning throw to D.J. Moore—a play that Panthers fans will never forget.

Walker's NFL journey also included stops with the Cleveland Browns, Chicago Bears, and Seattle Seahawks. He finished his professional career in the Canadian Football League with the Calgary Stampeders in 2025.

For fans who love a good underdog tale, Walker's story is a reminder that perseverance can turn even the longest shots into legends. His retirement marks the end of a remarkable journey that proves sometimes the best stories are the ones no one saw coming.
