INDIANAPOLIS — When the Dallas Wings hit rock bottom, they found their lifeline in Paige Bueckers. Selected with the No. 1 overall pick in 2025, she was the rope thrown to a franchise drowning after a nine-win season and its third coach in four years. But even a generational talent can't work miracles overnight — the Wings missed the playoffs in her rookie campaign.
Fast forward to Saturday, and the narrative has shifted. In her sophomore season debut, Bueckers led the Wings to a thrilling 107-104 victory over the Indiana Fever, offering a glimpse of a team that's finally found its bearings. "I've been saying, I feel like this is the best roster we've had since I've been here," said four-time All-Star guard Arike Ogunbowale. "It's just complete."
Bueckers wasn't just the missing piece — she was the catalyst. After a second straight postseason-less year, Dallas made bold moves: hiring respected college coach Jose Fernandez from South Florida, signing forwards Alanna Smith and Jessica Shepard in free agency, and drafting UConn sharpshooter Azzi Fudd to reunite with Bueckers. The result? A roster that looks ready to compete.
On Saturday, Bueckers delivered a masterclass: 20 points, four assists, three rebounds, and just one turnover. "She's special," Fernandez said. "She reads how she's being guarded. Having coached against her and seeing her now, she sees things two, three times ahead of stuff. That's remarkable."
Fresh off a busy offseason that included stints in Unrivaled and with Team USA's senior national team, Bueckers is proving she's more than ready to steer the Wings toward calmer waters.
