The San Diego Padres are making roster moves as they navigate through some tough injury news. Catcher Luis Campusano has been placed on the 10-day injured list after suffering a broken left toe, opening the door for 28-year-old Rodolfo Durán to make his major league debut Thursday night.
Campusano's injury occurred Tuesday when he fouled a ball off his foot. The veteran backup catcher had been enjoying a strong start to the season, hitting .288 with a .958 OPS while splitting time with Freddy Fermin behind the plate. "Just got a little fracture in his big toe," Padres manager Craig Stammen explained. "It's one of those things that he could potentially play through, depending on pain tolerance. But we think it'll be good to get past it in the IL stint instead of trying to play through something."
This setback creates a memorable moment for Durán, who finally reaches the majors after a minor league journey that began way back in 2015. The Dominican catcher started in the Phillies organization and later spent time with the Yankees and Royals before signing with San Diego in January 2025. He's been putting in work at Triple-A El Paso this season, batting .238 with a .785 OPS in 23 games. Durán was in the lineup for Thursday's homestand opener against St. Louis, batting ninth and catching right-hander Michael King.
"This is a pretty cool call-up for him and all of us," Stammen said. "We really loved what we saw from him in spring training this year and what he did last year in Triple-A. I expected him to be a great catcher. He's got a great arm, but his bat has come alive the last two years. We definitely see him as a big league catcher."
In other roster news, the Padres transferred right-hander Joe Musgrove to the 60-day injured list as his recovery from Tommy John surgery continues to progress slower than anticipated. Musgrove hasn't pitched since the NL playoffs in October 2024, made only one spring training appearance, and still hasn't resumed throwing. "He's just focused on getting healthy, doing whatever he needs to do on a daily basis," Stammen noted.
For Padres fans, these moves highlight the unpredictable nature of a long baseball season. Campusano's absence puts a spotlight on the team's depth behind the plate, while Durán's debut offers a fresh story to follow. And with Musgrove's timeline uncertain, the pitching staff will need to continue stepping up as they push through the summer months.
