Paddy Donovan is back in the championship picture after a hard-fought majority decision victory over Karen Chukhadzhian in Germany, earning himself another shot at the IBF welterweight title.
The Irish southpaw (15-2, 11 KOs) came out sharp in the early rounds, using his movement and counter-punching to take control. He scored two knockdowns—a crisp counter shot in the sixth, and a more controversial call in the eighth that some felt was more of a shove. But as the fight wore on, Donovan's energy dipped, and Chukhadzhian (26-4, 14 KOs) began to rally with aggressive pressure.
Still, the judges saw enough from Donovan to give him the nod: two cards read 114-112 and 115-111 in his favor, with a third scoring it 113-113. Our unofficial card also had it 114-112 for Donovan.
This win puts Donovan right back in the mix for the 147-pound belt he couldn't claim last year against Lewis Crocker. That fight was a close, competitive battle that ended in a split-decision loss for Donovan. Now, with Crocker still holding the title and set to defend against Liam Paro in Australia on June 24, Donovan's path to a rematch is clear.
The second half of the fight was all Chukhadzhian, as Donovan slowed and had to trade more than he'd like. But the opening rounds were decisive, and Donovan's early work proved enough to secure the win. It wasn't pretty down the stretch, but it was effective—and in eliminators, that's all that matters.
For the Irish fighter, the road to redemption is now mapped out. For boxing fans, the welterweight division just got a lot more interesting.
