Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur isn't shying away from a potential roster shakeup, and he's getting real about why the team is taking a long look at a familiar name.
The Packers didn't have a first-round pick in this year's draft, but they still managed to address several key areas. However, one position they notably passed on was wide receiver—despite losing both Romeo Doubs and Dontayvion Wicks this offseason. Instead, the team is putting its faith in second-year receivers Matthew Golden and Savion Williams to step up behind Jayden Reed and Christian Watson.
Green Bay did add an intriguing undrafted free agent in J. Michael Sturdivant, but when it came to top-tier receiver talent, the Packers chose to sit out the draft entirely. That's where veteran Chase Claypool enters the picture.
Claypool, who hasn't played an NFL game since 2023 with the Miami Dolphins, was brought in for a tryout at rookie minicamp—a move that raised more than a few eyebrows. But LaFleur explained the decision with refreshing honesty.
"I mean, you guys saw him, right?" LaFleur said. "He's had great film out there, he's been productive, and he looks like he's in great shape. I mean, he's big. So we'll see how it goes."
At 6-foot-4 and 238 pounds, Claypool certainly fits the physical mold the Packers love. Originally a second-round pick by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2020, he burst onto the scene with back-to-back 800-yard seasons to start his career. But things took a turn after his attitude clashed with then-head coach Mike Tomlin, leading to a mid-2022 trade to the Chicago Bears.
That move marked the beginning of a steep decline. After those promising early years, Claypool managed just 451 receiving yards in 2022, followed by a disappointing 2023 season where he recorded only eight catches for 77 yards and a touchdown.
It's a long shot that Claypool has enough left in the tank to crack the Packers' roster this season. But in the NFL, stranger things have happened—and LaFleur is clearly open to finding out.
