The Green Bay Packers entered the 2025 season with a cornerback depth chart that looked thin on paper—and unfortunately, that weakness played out on the field. But the front office wasted no time addressing the issue this offseason.
First, they dipped into free agency to sign Benjamin St-Juste. Then, with their very first pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, they selected South Carolina cornerback Brandon Cisse in the second round. That’s a clear signal that upgrading the secondary was a top priority.
According to ESPN’s Ben Solak, the real goal here is to reduce Carrington Valentine’s playing time. Valentine struggled mightily last season, allowing a passer rating of 126.1 when targeted—a mark that ranked among the worst in the league for outside cornerbacks.
“The Packers are notoriously patient with rookies, and Cisse is far from a finished product,” Solak wrote. “But the most favored outcome in the Packers’ cornerbacks room is certainly Cisse winning the job over Valentine.”
In today’s NFL, you need more than just two reliable cornerbacks to slow down high-powered passing attacks. The Packers learned that the hard way in 2025. Now, they’re building depth with purpose.
Even if Cisse doesn’t win the starting job outright, Solak expects him to rotate in with Valentine and St-Juste. “Valentine struggles more with larger receivers, and Cisse and St-Juste should match up better,” he added.
Green Bay snuck into the playoffs last season, but if this revamped secondary delivers, the Packers could look much more convincing as a true contender in 2026. For a team that prides itself on defense, that’s exactly the kind of upgrade fans—and their apparel—have been waiting for.
