The Baltimore Orioles made a strategic bullpen move on Tuesday, acquiring left-handed pitcher Nick Raquet from the St. Louis Cardinals. This trade adds a fresh arm to the mix for first-year manager Craig Albernaz as the Orioles continue to navigate the long MLB season.

Raquet, 30, was designated for assignment by the Cardinals just days ago. The southpaw, originally a third-round pick in 2017, made his big-league debut last September with two scoreless innings for St. Louis. This season at Triple-A, he posted a 3.00 ERA in two relief appearances, showcasing the strike-throwing ability that caught Baltimore's eye.

"You can never have enough left-handed pitching, especially relievers," Albernaz noted, highlighting the constant roster juggle teams face. In exchange for Raquet, the Orioles sent minor league second baseman Brayden Smith to St. Louis.

The transaction comes as Baltimore manages its pitching depth. The club transferred veteran right-hander Zach Eflin to the 60-day injured list due to elbow discomfort, creating a need for fresh arms. Stepping up in Eflin's absence was Brandon Young, who was optioned back to Triple-A Norfolk after delivering five scoreless innings in a crucial win Monday.

Young's performance underscored the team's resilience. "B.Y. stepping up... was exactly what we needed," Albernaz said. "It just speaks to our starting pitching depth." For now, the focus turns to integrating Raquet, whose arrival provides another option as the Orioles look to solidify their bullpen for the challenges ahead.
